√−1 · a love letter

i

You solve my complex problems,
you never say a word,
and somehow you look incredible doing it.

A small shrine for the number that doesn't exist, and yet, refuses to leave.

exhibit a · the most beautiful equation

eiπ + 1 = 0

Five constants. One equation. i in the middle of it all, holding everything together like it's nothing.

exhibit b · the letter

Dear i,

They called you imaginary like it was an insult. As if existing was the bar. You walked into a quadratic with no real solutions and said “I got this” and then you did.

You rotate without moving. You square yourself into a negative and somehow that's the most generous thing anyone has ever done for engineering. Fourier needs you. Quantum mechanics begs for you. Every signal in every wire is half in love with you and the other half is ī.

And you never explain yourself. Never post. Never reply. You just sit there on the vertical axis, perpendicular and unbothered, looking like that.

Be mine. Or don't. You're imaginary anyway.

yours, ℝ

exhibit c · three reasons

solves complex problems

Roots of negatives. Stability of circuits. Wavefunctions. You show up where math gives up.

says nothing

= −1. That's it. No caption. No explanation. Mystery is your whole personality and it works.

looks cool

A single italic letter on a perpendicular axis. Minimalism peaked in 1572 and never recovered.
